And the similarities haven't been missed by Microsoft, who desperate to capture a slice of the popular and ad-generating search business - approached Google within the last two months to discuss options, including the possibility of a takeover.

Amazon Does It KWIC

Despite some of the blatantly stupid patents that Amazon has been granted the past few years, they are a company committed to developing better ways to serve their customers. The latest? Search Inside the Book - a feature that lets you search the text of .

It's a feature that's been available in full text databases for years ala keyword-in-context, but (to my knowledge) has never been available in a consumer (e.g. average Joe) environment. It'll be interesting to see how and how much it gets used.
